I hate to say it, but I can't really see the usefulness of Walkie Talkie 3000 all that much. By all means, it looks great and it's a good idea, but the problem is that Bluetooth has a range of 10 meters, at most. Which I think is close enough that you may as well just talk to the person. You could setup a WiFi based ad-hoc network, sure, but again, it's limited in range. How about 3G? Sure, but even on a full 3G signal the transmissions would need to upload, and then download to the phone, which would take
at least a minute.

Thus, I have come up with a genius idea. Since iPhone OS 3.0 supports hardware devices, all you need to do is find a hardware partner, such as Motorola, or a similar walkie talkie company, and then make a small and cheap device that plugs into the dock connector and communicates with the app. This device would then act as a transmitter and receiver - just like a real walkie talkie - and provide a land-based link up to about 3km in distance. Maybe even whack an extra battery in there, and boom, you have extra battery life too.

Of course, that might not work so well since you'd need tons of R&D to develop it, testing, FCC approval, and god knows what else. So, screw it. Bluetooth will have to do. :P
